At Emerald Law Solicitors, we know that divorce isn’t only a legal process, it’s an emotional and practical journey that affects every aspect of life.
As part of Good Divorce Week 2025, which highlights ways to limit conflict through divorce, we’re proud to spotlight our trusted partner, Susannah Stobart of Re-find Your Way. Susannah specialises in helping individuals and couples navigate separation through Solution Focused Practice, an approach that supports calm communication, self-awareness and cooperation even during the most difficult transitions.
“This year’s Good Divorce Week focuses on “limiting conflict through divorce.” As someone who works with people navigating major life changes, such as divorce and separation, I value both the intention and the legal changes that support it.
Because I am a Solution Focused practitioner, I’m naturally drawn towards seeking to reframe the idea of ‘limiting conflict’ so that people can really think about what they want instead. From experience, people might say that they’d like more open communication, mutual respect, and to feel more confident in managing change.
Solution Focused conversations are refreshingly different from traditional counselling. It is a ‘talking therapy’ that is a forward-looking, practical, and hopeful approach. Rather than analysing the often painful details of what’s gone wrong, it helps people recognise what’s already working and then identify the signs of progress they and others will notice. This approach helps people communicate more calmly, rebuild cooperation, and regain a sense of control during challenging transitions.
Try this Solution Focused reflection:
“Suppose our conversation helped to limit conflict — what difference would it make?”
People often say:
• “I’d feel calmer and lighter.”
• “I’d have better conversations.”
• “I’d trust him/her more.”
These responses highlight possibility and hope. In Solution Focused work, we build on these hopes, help people notice progress, recognise resources, and create a more cooperative future.
Divorce doesn’t just have to be about limiting conflict - it can be about building cooperation, even with only one person present.
