This week is Resolution’s Good Divorce Week, a time to highlight the importance of navigating separation and the complex family matters that follow it with care, compassion and cooperation.
We’re proud to be supporting Good Divorce Week, spotlighting Resolution’s Code of Practice, which guides family law professionals to reduce conflict, act with integrity, and above all, put families first.
At Emerald Family Law, this approach isn’t just for one week, it’s how we work all year round.
What Is Good Divorce Week?
Good Divorce Week is an annual campaign from Resolution, the national community of family justice professionals committed to helping people separate constructively.
It’s a chance to showcase how family law can be done differently, focusing on solutions, not battles, and prioritising the needs of the whole family. ‘Good divorce’ may sound odd at first, but there are so many ways a divorce or separation can be unnecessarily difficult, painful, and just, well… bad. Divorce and separation are never easy, but with the right team by your side and a constructive approach, your divorce doesn’t need to be bad.
As a proud Resolution member, Angie Brown of Emerald Law Solicitors is committed to these principles every single day. Every family deserves a respectful, informed, and supportive path forward.
Why It Matters More Than Ever
Today’s families are wonderfully diverse, blended families, same-sex couples, cohabiting parents, stepfamilies, civil partnerships and more.
Amid this complexity and growing economic pressures, access to high-quality, family-focused advice is vital. Families need clear, compassionate guidance that helps them make practical, child-centred decisions.
Good Divorce Week is a timely reminder that a better way forward is possible, one built on cooperation rather than confrontation.
What Is a “Good Divorce”?
You might wonder, “Is there really such a thing as a good divorce?” In my experience, there can be.
Divorce is rarely easy, but it can be handled well. A “good divorce” means approaching separation as the evolution of a family, not the end of one. It’s about surrounding that family with the right professional and emotional support so they can move forward positively and with dignity.
When communication and cooperation are prioritised, families can:
- Reduce emotional and financial costs
- Resolve matters more efficiently
- Build the tools to co-parent effectively
- Lay the groundwork for healthier relationships beyond separation
A constructive divorce isn’t just about smoother proceedings; it’s about setting a positive foundation for the future.
Why Mediation Matters
Mediation is one of the most powerful tools in achieving a positive outcome.
It provides a safe, neutral space where both parties can explore solutions with the support of a trained mediator. It’s cost-effective, confidential, and focused on constructive dialogue rather than confrontation.
At Emerald, we also offer Child-Inclusive Mediation, which can give children a voice in a safe and supported way. In one case, this approach helped a young person open up about struggles that would never have been uncovered through court proceedings, leading to essential emotional support and a more understanding family dynamic.
That’s the kind of difference mediation can make.
