What Is a British Citizenship / Naturalisation Application?
A British citizenship application (also known as a British naturalisation application) is the process of becoming a UK national after living lawfully in the country for a qualifying period.
Applicants must meet strict British citizenship requirements, including residence, good character, language ability, and knowledge of life in the UK.
Why Becoming a British Citizen Matters
Obtaining British citizenship gives you the freedom to live, work, and travel as a UK national, without visa renewals or immigration restrictions. You’ll have the freedom to apply for a British passport, apply for social benefits and pursue any career or educational opportunities. In short, becoming a British citizen gives you all of the rights and freedoms as someone who was born in the UK.
Importantly, because obtaining British citizenship through Naturalisation grants you permanent status, you do not need to worry about renewals, deportation or being denied entry to the UK.
Who Is Eligible to Apply to Be a British Citizen?
Eligibility to apply for British citizenship depends on a number of factors, including how long you’ve been in the UK, your immigration status, and your character.
You can apply to be a British citizen through naturalisation if you:
- Have lived in the UK for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a British citizen).
- Hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status for at least 12 months (not required if married to a British citizen).
- Meet the British citizenship residence requirements, including permitted absences.
- Have passed the Life in the UK Test and an approved English language test.
- Are of good character (no serious criminal or immigration offences).
- Intend to make the UK your permanent home.
Step-by-Step British Citizenship Application Process
Initial Consultation & Eligibility Review
We will have an initial consultation to assess your personal circumstances and make sure you meet the British citizenship requirements. If not, there may be another route available to you.
Document Preparation & Legal Review
We work with you to gather and review evidence of residence, Indefinite Leave to Remain status, identity, and language proficiency. You will also need two referees to provide referee declarations. We can talk you through the requirements and what to ask for.
Submit Online Application & Pay Fees
To make an application, you must submit an AN form via gov.uk. Your dedicated immigration lawyer will submit the application on your behalf to ensure that everything is completed as it needs to be to reduce the risk of rejection.
Attend Biometrics Appointment
Once you have submitted the application, you will be invited to create a UKVCAS account where you will need to book a biometrics appointment. You’ll provide fingerprints and photos at the appointment and must take your passport with you. This is a mandatory step and allows the Home Office to confirm you are who you say you are. We will book this appointment for you and ensure all required documents are submitted electronically prior to your appointment to make this process as easy as possible.
Await Home Office Decision
2025 Home Office naturalisation application waiting times are currently around 3-6 months. While we can’t control the Home Office’s processing times, we can make sure that we process your application process quickly and effectively to give you the best chance of success sooner rather than later.
Citizenship Ceremony
If approved, you’ll attend a ceremony to receive your certificate of naturalisation. This is the final step to becoming a British citizen where you will make the oath and pledge.
What If My British Citizenship Application Is Refused?
There are many reasons why your British citizenship application might be rejected, and we understand how frustrating and disheartening it can be. Common reasons for refusal include issues with the ‘Good Character’ requirements, if you’ve spent too long outside of the UK in a certain amount of time, and perhaps most frustrating of all, incomplete or inconsistent information.
If your application is refused:
- You’ll receive a refusal letter with an explanation of their decision
- You will keep your current immigration status
- You will lose the £1,500+ application fee as the cost to make the application is non-refundable.
There is no formal right to an appeal when it comes to British naturalisation refusals, even if you believe a mistake was made. You can, however, request a ‘reconsideration’. This is a separate form that must be submitted and paid for (£372) where you must explain why you believe the decision should be reconsidered with supporting evidence.
British citizenship applications can become increasingly expensive and stressful if they are not handled correctly. It’s important that you seek legal support as early as possible if you want to make an application as a lawyer will be able to guide you through the process from start to finish. We can also support you through the reconsideration process or advise on a new application.

Common Challenges & How We Help
1. Residence and Absence Calculations
Many applicants miscalculate their permitted absences. We see this frequently as it is a simple mistake to make but can be costly if you get it wrong. We verify travel history and ensure compliance.
2. Referees and Documentation Errors
Incorrect or unqualified referees cause frequent refusals. We help you choose suitable professionals and prepare compliant forms.
3. Previous Immigration Breaches or Gaps
We assess your full immigration history and explain any past issues clearly to the Home Office. If there are any unexplained breaches or gaps in your immigration history, the Home Office will be forced to refuse your application.
4. Evidence of Lawful Residence
Having made many successful British citizenship applications, our team will make sure that your Indefinite Leave to Remain, visa history, and employment or tax records align for a seamless application.
